Second Week
Three Classes of People
A discernment about attachments: three kinds of people facing a possession that keeps them from God.
Preparatory prayer
Ask God our Lord for the grace that all my intentions, actions and works may be directed purely to the service and praise of his Divine Majesty.
Composition of place
Place myself before God our Lord and all his saints, desiring to know what is most pleasing to his Divine Majesty.
Petition
Ask for the grace to choose what is more for the glory of his Divine Majesty and the salvation of my soul.
Points
- The first kind of person would like to be free of attachment to what they have, so as to find God in peace, but does nothing about it until the hour of death.
- The second kind wants to be free of the attachment but to keep the thing, so that God comes round to what they want, rather than they going to what God wants.
- The third kind wants to be free of the attachment in such a way that they have no leaning toward keeping the thing or giving it up, but want to want it or not only as God moves their will. They become indifferent.
Colloquy
Make the same three colloquies as in the Two Standards (to Mary, to the Son and to the Father), asking for the grace to be like the third kind of person.
Adapted from the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola (1548).
